How to Get Your Air Brake Endorsement in BC: Step-by-Step Guide

The air brake endorsement ('Q' endorsement) is required for most commercial vehicles in British Columbia. Learn exactly how to obtain it, what the test covers, and how long it takes.

What Is the Air Brake Endorsement?

The air brake endorsement — officially known as the "Q" endorsement in BC — is an additional qualification you need on your driver's license to legally operate any vehicle equipped with air brakes.

In BC, this includes virtually all commercial vehicles Class 1 through Class 4, plus many Class 5 vehicles like motorhomes and large shuttle buses.

If you're pursuing a Class 1 or Class 3 license, you will need the air brake endorsement. The good news: it can be earned quickly, and Autobahn Driving School can get you through it efficiently.

Who Needs an Air Brake Endorsement?

You need the Q endorsement if you plan to drive:

  • Any semi-truck or tractor-trailer (Class 1)
  • Dump trucks, garbage trucks, tow trucks (Class 3)
  • School buses, transit buses (Class 2)
  • Most Class 4 vehicles (taxis, limousines over a certain size)
  • Commercial motor vehicles with air brake systems

Even if your current license class technically allows you to drive these vehicles, without the Q endorsement you cannot legally operate them with air brakes.

How to Get the Air Brake Endorsement in BC

Step 1: Complete an Approved Air Brake Course

You must complete a recognized air brake training course from an approved provider. The course covers:

Theory (Classroom):

  • How air brake systems work (compressors, reservoirs, chambers)
  • Types of air brakes (S-cam, disc, wedge)
  • Brake inspection procedures
  • Brake adjustment and slack adjusters
  • Emergency brake systems
  • Air loss rates and safe driving practices

Practical Application:

  • Identifying and inspecting all brake components
  • Performing a low-pressure warning test
  • Testing the parking/emergency brake
  • Verifying brake adjustment

Step 2: Pass the ICBC Air Brake Knowledge Test

After completing your course, you'll need to pass ICBC's air brake knowledge test. This is a written exam administered at any ICBC driver licensing office.

The test covers the same material as your course — brake systems, inspection procedures, safety rules, and regulations.

Passing score: 80% or higher

Step 3: Pass the ICBC Functional Test

Following the knowledge test, you must pass a functional (practical) test. This is conducted by an authorized examiner who will ask you to:

  • Identify and name brake components on an actual vehicle
  • Perform a proper pre-trip brake inspection
  • Demonstrate understanding of brake adjustment

This is not a driving test — it's a hands-on identification and inspection test conducted in a yard environment.

Step 4: Get Your Endorsement Added

Once you pass both tests, ICBC will add the Q endorsement to your license. This is typically done the same day at the licensing office.

How Long Does Air Brake Training Take?

Our air brake course at Autobahn Driving School can typically be completed in one full day (6–8 hours).

We offer:

  • Weekday sessions (Monday through Friday)
  • Weekend sessions (Saturday)

You can book your ICBC knowledge and functional tests immediately after completing the course.

Is the Air Brake Endorsement Included in MELT?

Yes — if you enroll in our Class 1 MELT program, the air brake training and endorsement process is fully integrated into the program. You do not need to take it separately.

If you already hold a Class 3 or lower license and just want to add the air brake endorsement, you can take the standalone course.
