What Is MELT Training in BC? Everything New Truck Drivers Need to Know
MELT (Mandatory Entry-Level Training) has been required for all new Class 1 drivers in British Columbia since 2021. Here's what the 140-hour program covers, how to qualify, and how Autobahn Driving School prepares you for success.
What Is MELT Training?
MELT stands for Mandatory Entry-Level Training — a provincially required program that every new Class 1 commercial driver in British Columbia must complete before receiving their full license.
Introduced by the Province of BC in July 2021, MELT was created to improve road safety by ensuring that all new commercial truck drivers receive standardized, comprehensive training before getting behind the wheel of a semi-truck on public roads.
Before MELT existed, there was no minimum training requirement for Class 1 in BC — a driver could theoretically pass the road test with minimal preparation. MELT changed that permanently.
Who Needs MELT?
You must complete MELT if you are:
- A new BC resident applying for your first Class 1 license
- A new immigrant who does not hold a valid Class 1 from an MELT-exempt jurisdiction
- A career switcher upgrading from a lower class license to Class 1
You do not need MELT if you already held a valid BC Class 1 license before July 29, 2021, or if you're transferring a comparable license from certain recognized jurisdictions.
What Does MELT Training Include?
The BC MELT standard requires a minimum of 140 hours of training broken into three components:
1. Classroom Training — 18 Hours
Theory covering:
- Air brake systems and operation
- Hours of Service (HOS) regulations
- Load securement and cargo handling
- WHMIS and dangerous goods basics
- Pre-trip inspection theory
- Safe driving practices and defensive driving
2. In-Yard Training — 16.5 Hours
Hands-on exercises in a controlled environment:
- Coupling and uncoupling a trailer
- Pre-trip vehicle inspections (performed correctly every time)
- Backing maneuvers: straight, offset, 90-degree alley dock
- Turning and maneuvering a full combination vehicle
3. In-Vehicle (On-Road) Training — 55.5 Hours
Real-world driving on public roads:
- City driving and urban intersections
- Highway driving including multi-lane expressways
- Mountain driving (grades, descents, engine braking)
- Night driving
- ICBC road test preparation routes
Note: There is also an additional 50 hours of self-directed study — reading, reviewing materials, and preparing for written evaluations.
Why MELT Matters for Your Career
Employers in BC's trucking industry now look for MELT-certified graduates as a baseline qualification. Major carriers including those operating out of the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley have updated their hiring requirements to reflect the new standard.
Completing MELT at an approved facility like Autobahn Driving School in Surrey means:
- Your training is recognized by ICBC
- You're eligible to book and sit the Class 1 road test
- You have documented proof of 140 hours of structured training that employers respect
- You're prepared for real conditions — not just the test
How Long Does MELT Take?
Most students complete the program in 4 to 8 weeks, depending on:
- Full-time vs. part-time enrollment
- Your prior driving experience
- Class scheduling and weather conditions
At Autobahn Driving School, we offer both full-time and part-time schedules so you can train around your current job or other commitments.
What You Need Before Starting
